SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - On the tail end of a home-and-home series with the Chillicothe Paints (11-15), the Champion City Half Trax (13-12) looked to rebound from a 6-5 stunning loss on Tuesday (June 23).
A dominant pitching performance and some key hits helped the Half Trax to a 7-1 win at Carleton Davidson Stadium.
Cody Croxford wasted little time to jump start the Half Trax as he hit a solo home run to right center field on the sixth pitch of the game. His fourth homer of the year gave the Half Trax a 1-0 lead.
A solo shot by the Paints in the third inning tied the game and that was the only offense that the Paints managed against Champion City starter Landon Bowden.
Derek Occhipinti gave the Half Trax a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning with his first clutch hit. Asa Dunlevey led off with a single and stole second base. Baxter Tedesco walked to follow, putting two runners on base. After a groundout, Occhipinti lined a two-run single up the middle.
Bowden turned in a quality start with one run allowed on one hit. He walked three and fanned ten batters. He is the second pitcher with ten punchouts in a game this season.
In the seventh inning, Occhipinti struck again. Dane Perry started with an infield single before stealing second. Tedesco walked and had a double steal with Perry. Hunter Fryman walked to load the bases with two outs. Occhipinti scored two more runs with another two-run single.
With a 5-1 lead, the Half Trax added on runs in the eighth inning with the bases loaded. Nate Lloyd singled, Croxford was hit by a pitch and Perry walked. After two outs, Tedesco was hit by a pitch, scoring Lloyd. A wild pitch made it 7-1.
Lloyd had two hits with Occhipinti having two hits and four RBI. The Half Trax walked nine times as a team.
Zach Cabell followed Bowden with three scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts for his first save.
Champion City remains at home for a 6:05 PM start on Thursday (June 25) against Johnstown.
