Monster Fourth Inning Pushes Champion City to 12-8 Win
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Champion City Half Trax (15-17, 2-3) got their second straight win in the second half with a 12-8 win over the Kokomo Creek Chubs (17-17, 4-3) at Carleton Davidson Stadium on Friday (July 3).
Kokomo started the scoring in each of the first three innings, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. The Creek Chubs scored once in the first inning, twice in the second inning and one more in the third inning.
Champion City scored once in the third inning. Luke McClure led off with a single up the middle. A wild pitch moved him to second base and a pair of groundouts got him to third base and home, respectively. Noah Libed had the RBI groundout to plate McClure, cutting the lead to 4-1.
The Creek Chubs chased the Half Trax starter, Riley Niggemeyer in the fourth inning, adding a fifth run for a 5-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Champion City offense woke up and put nine runs on the board with 15 batters stepping to the plate. Over the course of the madness, the Half Trax had six hits, five walks, two hit batters - counting for nine runs and a 10-5 lead. Dane Perry, Asa Dunlevey and Jaxon Brown had two hits each in the inning - accounting for four RBI. Libed and Peyton Gray were hit with the bases loaded and Gray and Jayden Jaramillo each walked with the bags full. McClure capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
One more run scored for the Creek Chubs as they made it 10-6 at the midway point of the game.
A two-run seventh inning blew it open as the game was 12-6. Jaramillo was hit by a pitch, Gray got his first hit of the summer and McClure laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Baxter Tedesco had a sacrifice fly to left field and a wild pitch scored the second run.
Kokomo finished the scoring with a run in the eighth and ninth innings but Champion City was able to win 12-8.
Kokomo outhit the Half Trax 15-10 overall. Dunlevey had three hits in the game with Perry, Brown and McClure adding two-hit games. Everyone in the starting lineup scored at least once.
Niggemeyer started with five runs allowed in three innings. Miles Whitesell (W, 3-2) got the win with one run given up in three innings, fanning six batters. Braylon Holland earned his first save, tossing three innings of two-run ball.
The final game before the All-Star Break will be 5:05 PM on Saturday (July 4) against the Quincy Doggy Paddlers.
